Globalised worlds, globalised times, accelerated times

Customer care services work night shift in India for their clients half way across the globe in the USA. Banking interns in London work two 9-5 shifts within twenty-four hours in the hopes of permanent placement. At 25 people are running after PhD degrees. The dura- tion of daytime is extended with artificial lights in poultry farms so that the birds eat more and become fat. The lights from laptops, smart phones and also the tiny dots of lights from equipments on standby mode are keeping us awake. What is the rhythm of life in our times? We are trying to work day and night like machines but can our internal selves, the organs and the important metabolic systems keep pace?Margaret Thatcher wanted to change our souls through Neoliberalism. (Economics are the method: the object is to change the soul.) The constant accessibility due to the internet has dissolved the barriers between personal and professional lives and eaten up our souls.

“The neoliberal man is a competitive man, immersed in global competition.”
-Michel Foucault
