Seeds of Cement

A farmer sold his land. The land was sealed with cement. The farmer sowed a brick and watched a building grow. But the building is not his as once the crops had been. The owner has become a servant on his own land forever. This is the story of many farmers who were forced to sell their lands a decade ago to create new industrial and residential spaces, which would give India its shining face. Rajarhat New Town, near the city of Kolkata is one such space. The farmers live in the neighbouring villages like Nawabpur but come back to their lands to earn their living by means other than farming such as running a tea shop, laundry, tailoring or working for security and construction. As farmers, they often had no cash in hand but an assured supply of food. Today the money received from the sale of their lands is gone and so has the supply of food. Daily routine, physical activities, living conditions and emotions have changed for better and for worse, but the hands will not sow seeds anymore.
